Best Golf Umbrella for Wind and Rain

Weigh Up These Factors When Making your Choice

The Size of the Canopy

Ordinary everyday umbrellas are fairly small, designed simply to keep you dry in rainy weather. When you are out on the golf course, you are usually far more exposed to the elements because there is rarely anywhere to shelter. Rain often sweeps across a golf course driven by wind and in the middle of a round of golf, you simply have to get on with things.

The last thing you want is for everything to get wet and that includes your clubs, and especially their grips. If you can keep everyone and everything as dry as possible, you have a better chance of completing your round in decent condition, and with a decent score. With an umbrella with a large canopy, that is more realistic.

You should expect a golf umbrella to have a diameter of at least four feet and the market has examples where that diameter exceeds five. As long as the umbrella remains easy to use with such a diameter, it makes sense to think about something of that size.

Remember also that on a day when the sun is high in the sky, you also need protection from its rays. Water will keep you hydrated but it is the size of the canopy that will give you maximum protection from heat and sunburn.

The Weight of the Umbrella

You should consider the weight of the umbrella as well; it should be made from lightweight materials which do not compromise quality, durability and protection.  The best golf umbrella has to be able to do its primary job which is protection from the elements, and you need to decide where to strike the balance.

Materials Used in Manufacture

Strength is important but simply picking the strongest materials is not sufficient. You need to decide whether the umbrella is easy to open and close and not too inflexible because priority was given to its strength above anything else.

Some materials are more vulnerable than others when it comes to lightning, in effect electricity, with golfers being warned to get off the course at the slightest inkling of a problem. It takes time to get off a course, or find appropriate shelter so consider this when thinking about a purchase.

Waterproof, or at least material that is highly water-resistant, material is the minimum you need from your golf umbrella. Raindrops will not penetrate Teflon for example and will run off an umbrella with a Teflon coating. If the material used absorbs the rain instead, the umbrella will gradually become heavier. That is not all; Teflon provides excellent protection from the rays of the sun.

Fiberglass is lightweight yet sturdy enough to be used in good quality golf umbrellas.

User-friendly

Before you buy an umbrella, you must be certain that it is easy to use. If a sudden shower comes along when you are on the golf course, your umbrella must be readily accessible then easy to open, and ultimately close when the shower passes.

  • Sometimes very large umbrellas can be a little difficult to open. If it has a press button mechanism for instant opening, you will have no problems. When you need to open the umbrella manually, you may find things a little more difficult, especially because you may be hurrying as the wind gets up and rain begins to fall.
  • If you are happy with the handle, that is a definite plus. The handle is your only point of contact with the umbrella and if you are comfortable with it, then that is a positive reason for deciding to buy one rather than another.
  • It may seem obvious to say this, but you should never buy without opening an umbrella up to see if it suits you. The length of the shaft should suit you and that may be dependent on your height. Try how you would hold it when rain arrives and get a feeling for whether it suits you.
  • You should check whether the umbrella has a sleeve which can make it easier to carry.

The Aesthetics

Color and design are factors worth at least some consideration. Color is a personal choice with some golfers happy to stand out on a golf course for their appearance so why not let their umbrella perform a similar function? Bright colors may not be every man’s taste in daily life but on a golf course, the normal rules may not apply.

Bright colors and distinctive patterns are actually easier to see at a distance so to some extent there is a practical reason to think about appearance. In gloomy weather, it may be an advantage to be visible to the match playing behind you on the golf course, especially since the pace of play may drop in poor weather conditions.

Warranty

While some golfers may not think a guarantee is worthwhile on an accessory purchase, it is an additional feature that is worth having as long as it appears to cost nothing. No golf umbrellas are really expensive, but it does not make sense to waste money.
